Divorce Consultation - Unbundled Legal Services

If you are a person who would like to have attorney advice at hand during your divorce but not have the added cost of having to pay to retain an attorney, this may be a good option for you.

Following changes made in the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure in 1999 attorneys may now provide legal services to those persons who wish to move their case through the court system without an attorney formally representing them through the entire case. This is known as pro se, without counsel.

In other words, attorneys’ can offer ‘unbundled legal services’ prior to and during the course of a divorce or post divorce matter, without being involved for the entire case. This seems to be very beneficial for those who are working with a mediator to dissolve the marriage or are negotiating with their spouse and /or do not have the funds to hire an attorney full time.

This approach may be the choice of those individuals who still are able to communicate with each other and there is still a level of trust between them.

It is important to understand that I can offer this type of advice to only one party to the divorce. The other party may, at their option, meet with another attorney for their advice.

I can offer you my opinion on the overall case, or offer assistance on specific matters such as explaining how a case proceeds through the courts, our Colorado maintenance and child support statutes and discuss custody issues, now called parental rights and responsibilities, parenting time and post degree parenting issues.  I can prepare documents and stipulations (legal agreements). I can assist you in preparation for an upcoming ISC (initial status conference), mediation or court hearing.

Additionally, I provide advice regarding adoptions, powers of attorney, prenuptial agreements and post decree enforcement and modifications child support, parenting time and maintenance.

Note: to retain an attorney is simply to pay advance fees which are held by the attorney in a special account until these fees are earned.
